What Is a TikTok Shop Affiliate, and What Isn't?
An affiliate sells on commission and gets paid only when the product moves. That is different from hiring a creator, and it changes how you vet them.

A TikTok Shop affiliate is a TikTok creator who promotes products from the Shop marketplace and earns a commission on the sales they drive. The commission is the whole relationship: no retainer, no contract signed before the sale. If their video sells nothing, they earn nothing.
The difference from a creator you hire is who carries the risk. With a paid deal, you pay up front and hope. With an affiliate, the creator is paid from the sale, so the only thing you put at risk is the sample. That is why the affiliate model rewards picking well: the wrong creator costs you a sample, and the right one costs you nothing until they sell.
What an affiliate is not
- Not every creator with a link. A one-off sponsored post is a paid deal, not the affiliate model.
- Not a promise to post. An affiliate picks your product up; there is no guaranteed content.
- Not a follower count. Affiliation is about what they sell, not how many people watch.
Why the line matters when you vet
The two models need different questions. For a paid deal, you ask what the post will do. For an affiliate, you ask whether this creator converts, because nobody is paying them to show up but the sale. The affiliate is the cleaner test of selling power, because the creator only gets paid if the product moves.
